Membership in the BC Skeptics Society gives you access to philosophical and technical resources.
Note: Membership classification has changed! We now invite all those interested to join our contact list and attend meetings.
Membership is not required for any of our services. We are happy to answer questions from the media, school teachers, students, or anyone who is interested in examining the evidence for paranormal or fringe science claims.
Joining our contact list allows you to receive notification of upcoming events such as Skeptics in the Pub, calls for experimental assistants, and releases of our publication, the rational enquirer. This publication reports on investigations conducted by our groups, and summaries of investigations conducted by our colleagues worldwide.
We hold meetings several times per year. Usually a speaker - sometimes a local member, sometimes a guest from out of town - will inform you of an investigation he or she has personally conducted, and the meetings are a chance to exchange information. And, they are an opportunity to meet new people who share your commitment to find out the facts.
You may wish to offer your talents to our writing team, speaking team, or paranormal investigation teams. All three teams welcome any assistance you have time to give.
If you're skeptical, you're no doubt wondering why people volunteer to work without pay for an organisation like this. The answer is that many of us are teachers or scientists who have found that "New Age" beliefs which are now so prevalent get in the way of doing our jobs. And we are curious about claims made in the media and by our friends. Until we investigate, we will not know whether or not they are true. And, if they turn out to be false, it is very interesting to discover how people made these mistakes. Often people come to hold mistaken beliefs through misperceptions that shed light on how our normal perceptual apparatuses work.
